Abstract

Sternotherus odoratus (Latreille) is reported from a Holocene peat deposit in northern Indiana. In addition to turtle bones, sediment included subfossils of aquatic plants (Najas flexilis, Ceratophyllum demersum, Brasenia schreberi, Nymphaea odorata, Drepanocladus aduncus, Calliergon stramineum, Meesia triquetra), a gastropod (Gyraulus parvus) and fish (Centrarchidae). Vascular plant fragments from the sediment immediately surrounding the bones yielded a radiocarbon (¹⁴C) date of 3680 ± 80 y BP.
